We keep Jacobs, Balwen Welsh Mountains, Whitefaced Woodlands as well as commercial sheep such as Suffolk mules. In total we have over 200 sheep on the farm. We supply the fleeces from the rare breed sheep to hand spinners by mail order and we also attend the Cumbrian Woolfest every year with our best shearling fleeces and guanaco fibre. We usually shear in June, so get in touch just before, for the best shearling fleeces to be despatched to your door, hot off the sheep. We breed pedigree Whitefaced Woodland sheep and often have stock for sale. They are native to this area of the country and seem to thrive, doing as well as the welsh mountain sheep. For you spinners here is a listing of the type of fleece that can come off the sheep:
Balwen Welsh Mountain: These small sheep originating from Wales produce a soft fleece which is dark brown in colour and easy to spin. Tend to shed their fleece before we get to them for shearing, so not a lot of wool per fleece. Jacob Popular for spinning because of it’s softness and variety of natural colour within the fleece. Good for both spinning and making natural coloured rugs on a peg loom. Whitefaced Woodland Native to the South Pennines of England with a good staple length, soft and very white. Great for spinning and dyeing. Derbyshire Gritstone A hill sheep native to the Peak District with a surprisingly soft white fleece. Great for spinning and dyeing. Texel A nice white soft fleece off these French sheep, used on the farm as crossing sires on the commercial flock. Great for spinning and dyeing. |
